volunteer initiatives

Join us in our mission to empower communities through our robust volunteering initiatives. Aviation Sub Neighborhood Solution's facilitators have been instrumental in fostering productive relationships among like-minded community leaders who want to see residents in Aviation Sub and its adjacent communities thrive.

community-building and advocacy

We provide opportunities for residents to become empowered as protectors and investors in Aviation Subdivision's well-being and the quality of life of its residents.

We invite community leaders to join us in building a solid coalition of individuals ready to roll up their sleeves and work towards creating social, economic, and environmental equity in our neighborhoods.

accomplishments

Since our founding, ASNS has built a track record of community-driven action — and we're just getting started.

Alongside our partners, ASNS founders have facilitated successful collaborative events throughout our neighborhood, including anti-litter initiatives, community cleanups, community gardening projects, youth engagement programs, tree plantings, and intergenerational gatherings.

Our newest initiative is the Neighborhood Blight Reduction Committee, which educates residents and provides practical solutions for tackling the root causes of blight in our area.

Real Impact, Lasting Promise

  • Partnered with the Detroit Parks Coalition as official Park Ambassadors, bringing Summer in the Park programming to our neighborhood

  • Expanded our programming calendar to run May through August, offering consistent activities throughout the warm months

  • Built a thriving monthly community meeting that draws 40–100 residents — creating a regular space for neighbors to connect, organize, and shape the future of Aviation Sub

  • Founded and grew the Aviation Subdivision Neighborhood Association (ASNA), now led by a full elected board

  • Secured funding partnerships with the Gilbert Family Foundation, Kresge Foundation, and Detroit Pistons Foundation

  • Launched a resident home repair initiative through Motor City Makeover — repairing a fence in our first year and a door in our second, alongside numerous smaller projects including exterior lighting, Ring doorbells, water heater installations, and more

  • Joined CDAD (Community Development Advocates of Detroit) and connected with CEDAM for policy and grant support

  • Brought a formal adaptive reuse proposal for McFarlane School to Detroit City Council, launching the Reimagine McFarlane campaign
